National Programs
"GREATER SERVICE, GREATER PROGRESS"
A project conducted in partnership with the March of Dimes. Chapters sponsor workshops and other activities that assist pregnant teens and educate teen mothers about the importance of pre-natal and post-natal care, and to better understand infant and child developed development.
Project Reassurance
Buckle Up America
A safety awareness program to educate citizens, particularly parents about the life saving importance of the use of seat belts and child safety seats in automobiles.
Operation Big Book Bag
In its first phase in 1997, this project was set up in conjunction with the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order of Nobles of the mystic Shrine, Incorporated to get supplies to needy children.
Mwanamugimu Essay Contest
The primary goal is to increase the knowledge of young people about the knowledge of young people about the historical and contemporary development of African nations. The secondary goal of the program seeks to improve the writing and research skills of students. Chapters sponsors local essay contests that usually include award programs. Regional contests are also held, with winning essays announced at regional conferences.
Program for Africa
A program to provide African women -who produce more than 75% of the food grown on the continent-with grain grinders. This program is in conjunction with Africa.
Wee Savers
National project to educate young people about how to use their personal finances. The program sponsors trips to financial institutions, seminars on finance and learning projects.
Habitat for Humanity
Sigma Gamma Rho has worked in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity in building homes for the people in need. The cooperative project began in February 1994. Preceding the 1996 International Boule in Houston, TX the sorority helped build 3 homes in the area with their labor and contributions.
Hattie McDaniel Cancer Awareness & Health Program
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority is committed to providing education on and active support of early detection as well as research for the prevention and cure of breast, prostate, ovarian, colon and other types of cancers.
National Marrow Donor Program
Established in 1992, this initiative was developed to address and reduce the number of African American deaths due to a lack of sufficient numbers of race appropriate bone marrow donors. The program focuses on the education and recruitment of sorority member, affiliate and community donors.
Sigma Youth Symposium
The Sigma Youth Symposium focuses on some of the prevalent concerns that negatively impact our youth: drugs, teen violence, abuse, low self-esteem, suicide, teen pregnancy, etc.
